Wind Energy

As an active member of BWEA EWEA and AWEA, Latchways is fully involved with safety issues for the wind power industry, bringing its unique expertise to the safety aspects of ladder users of onshore and offshore wind energy facilities.

Working at height may be required during construction activities, including the assembly of wind tower components and general maintenance activities during operation.

Latchways plc has successfully tested its vertical fall protection products in accordance with the European Standards EN 353-1:2002 and American Standard ANSI Z359:1 2007. In addition, Latchways has performed additional tests recommended by both the HSE and BWEA. These test were conducted at TUV/NEL.

Latchways’ Mansafe fall protection solutions cover the complete wind turbine lifecycle including construction, operation and maintenance. The systems are specifically designed to take into account the structures and the movements of ascending, descending and moving from point to point. Their extraordinary versatility provides a safety solution for virtually any user requirement.

Ladder structures within a wind turbine are made from thin lightweight aluminium as opposed to steel. This means that whilst the ladder is strong enough for climbing, careful consideration should be given to the loads which the ladder may incur in the event of a fall. The advantages of the Mansafe Systems are that they are installed with the top anchor being fitted to steel work on the top platform, which is remote from the aluminium ladder.

The energy absorber is usually installed to the end of the cable. In the event of a fall the LadderLatch® or TowerLatch® units will lock onto the cable and the load is then passed up the cable to the energy absorber. The intermediate wire guides only hold the cable, not clamp it, hence the load goes to the top anchor and the force is not transmitted onto the ladder.

The attachment devices vary running smoothly so as not to hinder ascent or descent. TowerLatch incorporates a webbing strop to facilitate easy release and rescue of a casualty in the event of a fall.

The installation of the system is fast and simple. The intermediate wire guides are set at 10 metre intervals, therefore making the installation process quick.

Latchways has worked with the major wind turbine manufacturers and have the flexibility to respond to bespoke needs.
